Saher Nassar (b. Gaza, 1986) draws from a haunting personal memory in his Target series, portraits inspired by a news report recounting soldiers firing at targets in a crowded street. Moved by the horror of that event, Nassar paints everyday civilians—a schoolboy, a man carrying groceries, a woman walking alone—capturing the fear and vulnerability on their faces. Each portrait is marked with a random scrap object, evoking the classical arrow-and-apple motif, yet here it signals the tragic absurdity of targeting innocent lives. Nassar’s work challenges viewers to confront the randomness of violence and its impact on ordinary people simply existing within a militarized reality.
