Towards Change by Nabil Anani
Nabil Anani’s (b. Latroun, 1943) work focuses on the symbolism of the olive tree, a major component of Palestine’s landscape and culture. For him, the destruction of the olive tree by Israeli forces reflects the plight of the people living under occupation; it acts as an important symbol of his people being erased by unnatural forces. The aim of this work is to not only depict the apartheid wall but to reduce and diminish it by contrasting it with a greater imagined landscape of Jerusalem and its people in the hope of change. The print depicts not only the orchard of olive trees but as well as the city in the background, pulling together all the elements of Palestine.
