Watermelon Flag by Khaled Hourani

Khaled Hourani (b. Hebron, 1965) creatively reimagines the Palestinian flag using the watermelon fruit’s red, green, black, and white hues—colors that were once banned under Israeli occupation after 1967. At the time, displaying the flag or its colors could result in imprisonment. The watermelon became a subtle yet powerful symbol of resistance. Hourani, co-founder of the International Art Academy of Palestine, has exhibited versions of the work internationally. He notes how recent attacks on Gaza have revived historic art as a form of protest and solidarity, resonating far beyond Palestine. Ironically, the idea for the watermelon motif originated from an Israeli officer who warned artists against even painting one.
