Survivals by Tayseer Barakat
Tayseer Barakat (b. Gaza, 1959) blends ancient Arab visual traditions and mythology with contemporary themes of political struggle. Drawing inspiration from cave art, Barakat layers figures into textured canvases, where they appear both immersed and emerging amidst swirling patterns. Recurring motifs—such as static birds and figures pressed against walls—evoke a sense of tension between stasis and resistance. Rather than merging old and new styles smoothly, the collection highlights their friction, reflecting the complex, contested nature of Palestine’s identity within broader global struggles.
