The Immigrant by Sliman Mansour

Sliman Mansour (b. Birzeit, 1947) portrays a Palestinian woman in traditional dress, carrying oranges through the streets of New York City. This striking contrast between heritage and modern urban life captures the complexity of the diaspora experience. The womanโ€™s traditional attire reflects her connection to her Palestinian identity, while the oranges serve as a symbolic link to the land she left behind. Set against the backdrop of a foreign city, her strength and steady gaze speak to the challenges and perseverance of immigrants who carry their culture across borders. Through this image, Mansour honors the spirit of those living in exile, showing how identity and memory endureโ€”even far from home.
