Sit-In by Khaled Hourani

Khaled Hourani reflects on the way individuals dissolve into crowds, forming a unified human mass where personal identity gives way to collective agency—often driven by desperation. Yet, this unity is fleeting, as each person eventually returns to their own isolation and individual fate. In response to these moments, the artist paints, illustrates, and colors crowds, seeking to trace the thread that connects them to broader questions about life and its mechanisms. Inspired by protests he photographs or participates in, his work grapples with the tension between the present and the future, the individual and the collective. Hourani questions whether to freeze these moments in time or attempt to make them eternal through art. While uncertainty and doubt persist, the resulting paintings raise existential questions and explore the boundaries of the self.
