People and Chairs by Nabil Anani
One of the distinguishing features of Nabil Anani’s work is that he combines the skills of a craftsman with the imagination of an artist. As an artist who has been practicing for many years he continually explores and researches the possibilities of his materials venturing into new terrains with them. At the same time, as is evident in his work, there is an ongoing re-evaluation of the repertoire of his art as he excavates his own ideas almost working like an archaeologist might. Anani presents a body of work around the theme of chairs and people. For Anani there are many nuances to the chair, for it is an object that we utilise throughout our life, as a space for resting, working and socialising. The chair is an every day object, whose design and form is often taken for granted, and in a sense it is the possibilities of the form of the chair and the different associations chairs carry that the artist explores in his work.
The significance of the past continues to be central to Anani’s work. In our world of technologies and consumer culture, Anani is an artist who pays reverence to the past and its art forms. In a time of rapid change it is though we can find a safe haven in the permanence and monumental qualities of historical art forms which have stood the test of time and continue to leave an impression upon us. Studying the art works of ancient civilisations, Anani creates works from everyday materials and forms transforming their qualities into fine art which display a continuity with the rich historical art of the region.
