Ekhtilal by Asad Azi
Part of Zawyeh Gallery’s Posters for Gaza initiative, Asad Azi aims to spotlight the ongoing ethnic cleansing and massacres in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and recognition of Palestinian rights. Rooted in a long tradition of Palestinian political posters—widely produced in the 1970s and ’80s by the PLO with contributions from local and international artists—this work continues the legacy of visual resistance, guided by themes of freedom, dignity, and resilience. Azi’s expressive and figurative work explores themes of identity, community, and memory, often blending historical references, media, and techniques. Ekhtilal reflects this layered approach, weaving together the personal and political to uncover overlooked narratives and challenge dominant histories. Azi, who represented Palestine at the 1986 Venice Biennale, continues to live and teach in Yaffa, contributing to Palestinian cultural discourse through both visual art and written work.
